Ask for a Signier Sign
Feeling Lost? Try this.
Give Me a Sign
“Ask the Universe for a signier sign.”
It was not the first time I’d said this to a querent at an event, but as soon as it escaped my lips at the Whidbey Ren Faire, I realized I was talking to myself.
We tend to forget that we don’t have to be coy with the Universe. We can just straight up ask for the guidance we so deeply desire and deserve.
Truthfully, I’d been feeling adrift ever since Finding Solid Footing--the stunning memoir I’d been helping sepsis survivor and amputee advocate Katy Grainger to birth--found its footing and galloped off into the sunset on May 5th. How could I ever hope to find a project as deeply satisfying and meaningful as that one? What should I focus on in the meantime?
Time to take my own advice…
I needed a sign from the Universe. Preferably, a blinking neon arrow pointing directly to the place I should be putting my focus right now to help me become the person I’ve been envisioning for the past decade or so whenever someone says, “Picture your ideal self.”
I have such a clear image of this woman. She’s a Bohemian beauty with wild, untamed, silvering curls blowing in the wind, blazing eyes lit up from within, dressed like an elf on a forest walk, holding herself with the regal bearing of a faerie queen, but grinning like an enthusiastically absurd, confirmed goofball.
So you can imagine my shock when, after breaking down our booth and taking stock of just how well we’d done at that event, I caught a glimpse of my reflection and realized--HOLY SHIT, THAT’S HER!
I am she. I have arrived.
I am already doing exactly what I’m meant to do. I just need to do more of it, more intentionally.
I grabbed my journal and described in detail everything I already have that I want more and more of. The commitments I am prepared to double down on, and the misaligned, fear-based actions I am ready to release for good. I ended by signing my name, just to make sure the Universe and I both understood that this was not just an insight, but a binding contract.
So naturally, I woke up the next morning with a major resistance hangover. All the doubts and the What-Ifs had come to call, and I, fresh out of distractions, had no option but to entertain them.
That’s when it happened. I raised my palms to the sky and called out, “I surrender!”
Like the third cast in a bone reading, I needed clarity on where to begin.
So I finally did it. I straight up asked for a signier sign.
The Signiest of Signs
That evening, I went for a beach walk after dinner, as I am wont to do. I like to look for beached bones and enjoy the antics of the herons, seagulls, ravens, crows, cormorants, and other seabirds as they do their final fish of the day. And sometimes, if I’m very lucky, I’ll spy a seal, or even a seal family, frolicking in the twilight.
The moment I arrived, I could tell this walk would be special. Sitting atop the driftwood log that marks the transition from shore to beach was a bleached and weathered chunk of seal bone. It had clearly been set there intentionally, so at first I hesitated to take it. But after establishing that I was, in fact, the only human remaining on or anywhere near the beach, it was clear that it had been left there for someone to find. And that someone was me.
With a prayer of appreciation, I pocketed the bone and continued on my merry way.
After watching an epic battle between a male and a female seagull over a mussel, I looked back to the ground and immediately found another chunk of seal bone, very similar to the first, but slightly smaller. I felt so blessed, I began to sing to myself:
“I am blessed, wild, and free. What I seek is seeking me…”
As I sang, I began to feel that feeling you get when someone is watching you. I looked right and left, but saw no one. Just driftwood, shells, and pebbles. Then I turned to look out at the water.
A seal was staring back at me. It was so close, I could see its whiskers dripping.
I froze. I knew I should keep singing, since that’s what must have attracted it. But I was rendered soundless. Breathless, in fact.
We stared at each other, holding eye contact for what felt like a minute but was probably only a few seconds. Then the seal slipped silently back into the water and disappeared.
I reached into my pockets, holding the bones of this beautiful creature’s ancestors in my hands for a moment and blinking back tears before continuing on my way.
Once home, after debriefing with Sister Spike, I decided to do a focused reading to clarify where to put my focus right now that would really help me thrive.
I was wholly unprepared for what happened next.
Aside from the fact that Emphasis and The Claw combined to form a raven head (!) and the seed landed directly atop Serendipity, we have emphasis pointing directly through a portal created by the Divine Masculine & Feminine Principles toward Spirit, whose antenna is pointing straight up.
I stared at it for a while, mouth agape, until our household familiar, a black cat with yellow-green eyes, jumped up onto the table to take a peek.
“What do you make of this, Dorothea?”
As if in answer to my question, she reached her furry black paw into the tray and turned the obstacle over, wedging it even further into the side of the tray.
Then she sniffed at the Community bone and nudged it with her nose into the center circle. As she did so, the seed rolled to the opening of the Serendipity spiral.
Meanwhile, the money bone flipped from the “money out” position to the “money in” position and landed in the center circle, sandwiching Community between incoming Resources and the Heart.
As I sat there stunned, Spike called to me from the door, saying, “Odd… there’s more.”
Following her onto the porch, I saw a massive Glory in the sky: a circular rainbow of epic proportions. And suddenly, I was crying.
Now that’s what I call a signier sign!
