Choosing a theme word for 2026
The Theme Thing
If you, like me, are a dynamic, poly-passionate witch who continually struggles with the question of where to focus your energy for best results, this practice is for you.
It’s super simple. All you do is choose a theme word for the year, something you want to feel, experience, and share more of in the coming year, and commit to focusing on it.
Then, throughout the year, whenever that theme comes up, pay attention and prioritize it.
That’s it. That’s the practice.
It does come with a warning label, however: whatever theme word you pick, you will learn it on a level you can barely fathom from here.
2025, the year of DEVOTION
Last year, I had the bright idea to choose the word “DEVOTION.” I’ve been saying for years now that giving my authentic gifts is a “devotional practice.” The DOER cycle has made the “practice” part much easier and more consistent, so I thought it was time to focus my efforts on the other half of the equation.
Little did I know what I was actually asking for.
This year has been, in so many ways, an endless series of trials and tribulations testing my devotional capacity. Testing my faith, testing the limits and the edges of my devotion.
This year, I learned:
Exactly how far I’m willing to go to protect my devotional practice
What is and is not a devotional practice for me
The difference between devotion and compulsion
The internal payoff of staying devoted, even when there is no external payoff
That I have nothing to prove when it comes to my capacity for devotion
That the person who most deeply needs and deserves my devotion is me
Important and necessary lessons. But certainly not what I thought I was signing up for when I picked the word “DEVOTION” last New Year’s Eve.
This year, to save me from tears (ha!), I’ll focus on something that truly lights me up…
My Theme Word for 2026
Before I announce this year’s theme word, I’ll walk you through the process of how I arrive at a theme word, so you can play along if it resonates.
Step 1: After harvesting and processing last year’s yield, I do a free-write starting with the prompt, “This year, I…”
Here’s a short excerpt, just to give you the gist:
“This year, I receive and accept all gifts, blessings, and rewards in alignment with my authentic energy. This year I am a receiver, perfectly attuned to the frequency of me.”
Step 2: I comb back through the free-write, highlighting keywords that light me up.
“This year, I receive and accept all gifts, blessings, and rewards in alignment with my authentic energy. This year, I am a receiver, perfectly attuned to the frequency of me.”
Step 3: I look for the patterns. What comes up repeatedly? What ties together? What are the high-level themes?
The common thread this year was obvious: I am ready to RECEIVE!
Not just to reap the rewards of my devotional practice, but also to be a RECEIVER for the divine. To channel aligned frequencies, amplify those vibrations, and play them loud for all to hear!
